Native-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals

چکیده
Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) violations, repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike processing, aspects of the second (L2) processing differ from L1, particularly at lower levels proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, violations are more likely result P600, similar L1 native speakers. Objectives: This study aims assess effect proficiency on late bilinguals determine whether L1-like cerebral activation patterns will result. Materials & Methods: In this descriptive quantitative research, subjects were two groups Persian-English (L1=Persian, L2=English; n=10 high-proficient, low-proficient; gender=female who started learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) after age 15 through explicit instructions. Within violation paradigm, Event-related Potentials (ERPs) collected neurocognitive lab Shahid Beheshti University, Iran, 2019- 20. experimental trials ERP task included violated regular past tense verbs. components compared with those (components closer P600). Results: t-value for peak latency differed significantly only Incorrect verb (ICV) condition O2 (P=0.039463, t=2.2205, CI: 0.003112- 0.11249, P<0.05) between (higher high proficient group). Conclusion: high-proficient group demonstrated that was determinant factor cortical representation than acquisition or type context.

Language effects in second language learners and proficient bilinguals investigated with event-related potentials.
The present study examines language effects in second language learners. In three experiments participants monitored a stream of words for occasional probes from one semantic category and ERPs were recorded to non-probe critical items. In Experiment 1 L1 English participants who were university learners of French saw two lists of words blocked by language, one in French and one in English. We o...

متن کاملInteraction of native- and second-language vowel system(s) in early and late bilinguals.
The objective of this study was to determine how bilinguals' age at the time of language acquisition influenced the organization of their phonetic system(s). The productions of six English and five Korean vowels by English and Korean monolinguals were compared to the productions of the same vowels by early and late Korean-English bilinguals varying in amount of exposure to their second language...
